Crypto is Still in Its Early Days, Expected to Reach 1 Billion Users in 2030
“Am I too late getting involved in crypto?”. Is probably the most asked question to anyone that has been involved with crypto for a while. The answers often vary, and usually depend on the current market sentiment. Let's approach the subject with logic and see if we can reason our way towards an objective answer.
Crypto has seen tremendous volatility over its 15 years lifespan, with its 2021 bullrun being the latest and still fresh in everyone's mind, we have seen interest grow tremendously. But what would this mean in the larger picture and in the long term?
1 Billion Users in 2030
According to a joint report from Bitget BCG and Foresight most of the growth is yet to come. In figure 1 below we can see that only 0.3% of individual wealth is invested in cryptocurrency as opposed to 25% in equity markets, and less then 0.1% of institutional wealth as opposed to 4% within equity markets.This paints a picture in which there is significant room to grow.
While it is true that the market is maturing as more institutions are diversifying their portfolio into crypto, there is still plenty of growth potential in the space, and if the equity markets prove to be an accurate benchmark, the best is yet to come!
If the number of cryptocurrency holders is used as a representation for web3 users, and compare this against the adoption rate of Internet users in the 90's. Which in this case can be used as a benchmark, the message is clear.
Now what is important to realize is that we are talking about the potential growth of the industry. While it is possible, it does not necessarily mean we will see Bitcoin trading at $500.000 price level. It rather means that there will be plenty of opportunities ahead of us, many great projects are yet to be built, and most portfolios have yet to diversify in crypto. Therefore, the future is bright!
