The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced a big funding opportunity that will help integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into the American manufacturing sector. The agency will provide up to $70 million over five years through the Manufacturing USA program to create an institute focused on AI.

The new institute aims to strengthen the competitiveness and resilience of U.S. manufacturers by using the power of artificial intelligence. Concept papers should be submitted before September 30, 2024, by interested U.S.-based entities such as academic institutions and different organizations.

NIST pushes for AI integration in manufacturing

The funding provided by NIST aims to integrate AI into manufacturing processes to promote creativity and increase efficiency in the industry. It will concentrate on developing AI applications that can be used to streamline production lines, boost supply chain control, and heighten general manufacturing performance.

Moreover, the institute also prioritizes workforce development. It plans to equip American workers with skills that can enable them to operate or manage systems driven by artificial intelligence for manufacturing. This is achieved through training programs, among other educational projects, which are meant to prepare the workforce for changes brought about by evolving technology.

Building a communal groundwork for cooperative research and development constitutes the key aspect of the initiative. The institute intends to speed up the integration of AI across manufacturing by creating relationships between industry, academia and government.

NIST aims to accelerate AI growth

The cost-share requirement highlights how crucial non-federal funding sources are in backing up this initiative. This joint financial model encourages investment from different interested stakeholders, ensuring a strong and long-lasting base for the institute’s activities.

The application process for this funding opportunity starts by submitting concept papers. These papers will be assessed to see which projects have the most potential and can be done successfully. Applicants whose proposals are successful will then be asked to submit full proposals, which will be considered further.

The initiative is open to all types of U.S.-based entities, such as non-profit making organizations, profit-making companies and academic institutions. As a way of encouraging inclusivity, NIST seeks to engage as many people as possible so that they can give their input which will help in accelerating the rate at which AI grows within this sector.
