A South Korean public official embezzled about $440,000 in public funds to buy cryptocurrencies
According to a report by Yonhap News Agency, on the 13th, the Cheongju District Prosecutor's Office in South Korea stated that a public servant responsible for supervising the work and support projects of North Korean defectors settling in Cheongju, has embezzled 600 million Korean won (about 440,000 US dollars) of public funds by forging various official documents and invested in cryptocurrency since January 2017 for about 7 years. The prosecutor's office has arrested and charged the individual with embezzlement of public funds and forgery of official documents.A spokesperson for the Cheongju District Prosecutor's Office stated that they have seized assets including apartments and vehicles in an attempt to recover the funds. The prosecution plans to file a comprehensive case to impose a sentence that corresponds to the defendant's crime.
