Utah woman sentenced for dark web murder-for-hire plot
Krista Renae Stone, a 23-year-old woman from Salt Lake City, Utah, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for attempting to orchestrate a murder-for-hire scheme using the dark web.
Stone pleaded guilty in May 2024 to using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of murder-for-hire, targeting her ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend.
In addition to her prison term, Stone will serve three years of supervised release.
The plot began in March 2023, when Stone accessed a dark web site offering "hitman for hire" services, and agreed to pay $5,000 in Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) to have the victim killed.
Stone provided detailed instructions, including the victim’s photograph, location, and how she wanted the murder executed.
Fortunately, law enforcement discovered the website and intervened before the plot could be carried out, saving the victim's life.
Senior U.S. District Court Judge David Sam expressed his deep concern over the case, commending law enforcement for their efforts in preventing the crime.
U.S. Attorney Trina A. Higgins emphasised the emotional harm caused by Stone's actions and acknowledged the extensive investigation that thwarted the plot.
Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent in Charge Christopher Miller highlighted the dangerous implications of murder-for-hire schemes, stressing the importance of law enforcement’s role in preventing such crimes and protecting the community.
This case underscores the potential dangers of dark web criminal activities and the vital role of law enforcement in preventing tragic outcomes.
The sentence reflects the seriousness of the crime and aims to bring some closure to the victim and her family.
