TON-based games unite to protest Telegram CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest
Telegram-based crypto games like Hamster Kombat (CRYPTO:HMSTR) and Notcoin (CRYPTO:NOT) have joined the broader tech and crypto communities in protesting the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov.
Durov, the 39-year-old billionaire co-founder of Telegram, was detained in France on Saturday evening after arriving from Azerbaijan, according to reports from TF1.
The arrest is reportedly linked to Telegram’s alleged failure to moderate illegal activities on its platform, including terrorism, drug trafficking, and the distribution of child sexual abuse material.
In response, developers of games built on Telegram’s platform have voiced their support for Durov, emphasising their commitment to privacy and freedom of speech.
Hamster Kombat, a game with over 300 million players, introduced a new in-game card titled “#FREEDUROV,” with the tagline “Privacy is not a crime,” reflecting the sentiment of the community.
Notcoin, another popular game on Telegram, also criticised the arrest, calling it “the dumbest thing ever” to charge someone for technology and reiterating that “Privacy is not a crime.”
These actions were supported by the official TON (The Open Network) account, which tweeted in support of Durov, praising his dedication to freedom of speech and decentralisation.
The hashtag #FREEDUROV has gained traction across social media, with many in the tech and crypto communities rallying behind Durov’s cause.
The protest from the gaming community is just one part of a broader backlash, with figures like Elon Musk and Edward Snowden also speaking out against Durov’s arrest.
Snowden, in a tweet directed at French President Emmanuel Macron, called the arrest “an assault on the basic human rights of speech and association” and expressed disappointment in France’s actions.
The games on Telegram have been a significant part of the TON ecosystem, with millions of players engaged in these decentralised platforms, making the solidarity among developers and players a powerful statement.
As the situation unfolds, the unity of the crypto gaming community highlights the broader implications of Durov’s arrest for privacy rights and the future of decentralised technologies.
The response from these game developers and the crypto community underscores the importance of maintaining an open and decentralised internet, free from overreach by authorities.
The protest is expected to continue gaining momentum, with more voices likely to join the call for Durov’s release and the protection of privacy and free speech online.
At the time of reporting, Notcoin price was $0.009586.
