Colombian data authority charges Worldcoin for violations
At the time of reporting, the Colombian Industry and Commerce Superintendence (SIC), the country’s authority on data protection, has leveled charges against Worldcoin (CRYPTO:WLD), a biometric digital ID initiative, for alleged breaches of personal data regulations.
The charges center on whether Worldcoin mishandled the personal and biometric data of Colombian users in violation of local privacy laws.
According to SIC, the investigation will determine if Worldcoin’s data practices contravened Colombian legal requirements.
If found guilty, Worldcoin could face significant penalties, including fines up to $646,000.
In addition, the company might be forced to suspend or even cease its operations in Colombia depending on the severity of the violations.
Worldcoin has acknowledged the charges and is currently reviewing the situation.
The company stated that while such regulatory challenges are not unusual, it is committed to working with the SIC to address the concerns.
Worldcoin emphasised its dedication to transparency and compliance with data protection standards, underscoring its willingness to cooperate with regulatory authorities.
