Mark Zuckerberg Reveals Orion, Meta’s Revolutionary AR Glasses
Key Takeaways Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, introduced Orion, advanced AR smart glasses that overlay digital information onto the real world; These glasses are controlled via voice and neural interface; Meta also launched the Llama 3.2 AI model and added new voices to Meta AI.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, introduced the groundbreaking augmented reality (AR) smart glasses called Orion during the Meta Connect event on September 25.
"This is Orion—our first fully functioning prototype, and, if I do say so, the most advanced glasses the world has ever seen," he announced.
Orion's standout feature is its ability to overlay digital information directly onto physical surroundings, using mini-projectors embedded in the frames.
These glasses are controlled by voice commands and a neural interface worn on the wrist, allowing users to control apps and navigate the glasses with hand gestures.
The glasses' capabilities include seeing a holographic representation of the person you're video calling and playing holographic Ping Pong, as showcased in a demo. This demonstration highlighted how the glasses merge the digital and physical worlds, marking a shift away from devices like smartphones .
Zuckerberg said:
These glasses exist, they are awesome, and they are a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting.
In addition to these AR innovations, Zuckerberg announced the launch of Llama 3.2, an upgraded artificial intelligence (AI) model, promising better capabilities in understanding both text and images and allowing developers to create more sophisticated applications.
The company also revealed the addition of new voices for its Meta AI. Among the voices featured are British actress Dame Judi Dench and former WWE icon John Cena.
The unveiling of Orion represents a step toward a future where digital interactions become deeply integrated into everyday life, reshaping how people engage with technology.
Meta's announcements came after OpenAI's recent release of the "Advanced Voice" feature , which introduced five new voices to ChatGPT users.
