Fidelity reports data breach affecting 77,000 individuals
Fidelity Investments, a U.S.-based financial services company, has notified 77,000 individuals that their personal information was compromised in a recent data breach.
The breach occurred between August 17 and August 19, 2024, when an attacker created two unauthorised customer accounts and accessed sensitive information.
The breach was detected on August 19, and Fidelity promptly terminated the hacker’s access.
According to Fidelity, the compromised data includes names, Social Security numbers, financial account details, and driver's license information.
However, the company reassured customers that no funds or customer accounts were at risk.
This breach affects a "small subset of customers," according to the company, but the total number of impacted individuals, as reported to the Maine Attorney General, is over 77,000.
Fidelity is offering affected customers 24 months of free credit monitoring and identity restoration services as part of its response.
This marks the second data breach Fidelity has reported this year.
Earlier in 2024, the company disclosed another breach involving a third-party services provider, Infosys McCamish System, which affected roughly 30,000 individuals.
Fidelity, which manages $14 trillion in assets and serves over 51 million individual investors, continues to implement enhanced security measures to prevent future breaches.
According to Fidelity’s statement, the company is working with external security experts to investigate the incident and ensure that such breaches are promptly addressed.
