Are crypto conferences becoming more dangerous? Digital assets, already known for being riskier trades , are facing a growing challenge: security risks at crypto events.

Recent incidents, such as the robbery of Rooch Network co-founder Haichao Zhu in Bangkok, underscore the escalating threat landscape for conference attendees. As the community gears up for high-profile gatherings , including Ethereum’s Devcon, the need for heightened security becomes increasingly apparent.

Knifepoint Robbery in Bangkok

In the shadowy hours leading up to Ethereum’s Devcon, Haichao Zhu arrived in Bangkok late at night after a late-night flight. Alone and exhausted from travel, fate dealt him a harsh hand when two knife-wielding bandits confronted him and made off with his phone.

This close encounter was a jarring wake-up call that underscored the lurking dangers awaiting conference-goers in foreign urban labyrinths.

“Generally speaking, Bangkok is still a safe and fun place, but just like all other places, you gotta watch out for the darkness.” – Haichao Zhu

A Pattern of Crime at Crypto Conferences

Unfortunately, Zhu’s experience is not isolated. Similar incidents have been reported at other major crypto events. Several attendees encountered violent confrontations during the  Ethereum Community Conference in Brussels earlier this year.

Rishant Kumar of Kilt Protocol defended himself against an attacker, while another participant sustained a knee injury during a robbery. These alarming trends raise questions about the safety protocols at such gatherings.

The rise in security incidents at crypto conferences ties into a broader crime pattern involving digital currencies.

A report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) threw a spotlight on Southeast Asia’s underbelly, where digital currencies have become the new playground for crooks.

In 2023 alone, scam losses are pegged between $18 billion and $37 billion, with organized crime syndicates cashing in on the chaos.

Preparing for Devcon 7 and Other Crypto Events

Thailand is one of the safest countries in Southeast Asia for travelers, but anything can happen if you don’t keep your head on a swivel.

As Bangkok braces for the invasion of thousands of degens at Devcon 7, the focus will be keeping every crypto bro safe while they’re in town. From November 12-15, the city will host a digital gala featuring Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and many others.

The holy trinity of travel is money, phone, and passport. Protect all three above all else. Possessing these three can replace everything else.

Oh, and of course, leave your Bitcoin hard wallet at home. That goes without saying.
