Spot Bitcoin ETFs and Bitcoin strategy ETFs

In early 2024, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approved the first-ever spot Bitcoin ETFs, including those from Fidelity, BlackRock, and Invesco. These spot Bitcoin ETFs began trading on Thursday, January 11.
To help you understand this new addition to the ETF universe, Bitget has compiled a list of Bitcoin ETFs currently available for trading in the United States. Some of these ETFs are tied to the spot Bitcoin market, while others offer indirect exposure to this popular digital asset through Bitcoin futures.

What is a spot Bitcoin ETF?

A spot Bitcoin ETF is an exchange-traded fund—a highly liquid fund that fluctuates in price throughout the trading day, just like a stock—that directly tracks the price of Bitcoin, primarily by holding a substantial amount of the cryptocurrency itself. It's similar to a spot gold ETF, which holds physical gold bullion on behalf of its shareholders.

What is a Bitcoin strategy ETF?

Bitcoin strategy ETFs attempt to track the price of Bitcoin indirectly. Many of these ETFs started trading well before the first spot Bitcoin ETF approvals, and they remain available today.
Some invest in Bitcoin futures, while others invest in Bitcoin mining stocks. Due to the indirect nature of these investments, the returns of these funds are especially prone to deviating from the returns of Bitcoin.

The Bitcoin ETF price war

Ten different potential spot Bitcoin ETF issuers filed forms with the SEC in January, disclosing the fees they intend to charge. Some were launching new funds, while others were converting existing Bitcoin strategy ETFs into spot Bitcoin ETFs.
The flood of SEC filings, which continued until hours before the SEC's approval announcement and may continue still, reflected an ongoing price war between issuers. Many Bitcoin ETFs, both spot Bitcoin ETFs and Bitcoin strategy ETFs, are slashing their fees and offering limited-time promotional fee waivers.

Bitcoin ETF fees

Owning a Bitcoin ETF may, in some cases, be more expensive than simply purchasing Bitcoin on a crypto exchange. Here's why: Cryptocurrency exchanges typically charge one-time fees to buy and sell Bitcoin, while owning a Bitcoin ETF incurs an annual expense ratio fee. However, several ETFs have temporarily waived these fees.
You should also consider whether you'll ever transfer any Bitcoin from your exchange to a separate hot or cold crypto wallet. If so, you'll likely incur small withdrawal fees.
Finally, think about your exit strategy. This includes paying a trading fee when you sell.

What is the difference between Bitcoin spot trading and spot Bitcoin ETFs?

Bitcoin spot trading is for those who want to directly own and manage Bitcoin, while spot Bitcoin ETFs offer an indirect way to gain exposure to Bitcoin through a regulated financial product.

Should I buy spot Bitcoin or a spot Bitcoin ETF?

Some investors may feel safer gaining exposure to Bitcoin in their portfolios by purchasing a professionally managed ETF than owning actual BTC.
The widespread adoption of Bitcoin as an investment is relatively recent, and some people may be concerned about hacking or losing passwords or private keys needed to access their investment when it's stored in a secure Bitcoin wallet.
While almost anyone can open a Bitget account, not everyone is comfortable doing so. Others may be restricted to buying and selling securities in their traditional brokerage accounts for various reasons.
Many people choose to invest for retirement in an individual retirement account (IRA) or a 401(k) plan. For retirement investors who want modest exposure to Bitcoin without opening an account at a crypto exchange or Bitcoin IRA, owning shares of a Bitcoin ETF is a reasonable alternative.

Are Bitcoin ETFs safe?

Bitcoin ETFs provide easier access to Bitcoin without the need to directly buy or store the asset. However, their safety depends on factors such as:
Regulation:ETFs regulated by financial authorities offer greater protection against fraud and mismanagement.
Volatility:Bitcoin ETFs remain subject to Bitcoin's price volatility.
Management risk:Actively managed ETFs involve risks associated with the fund manager's decisions.
Liquidity risk:Liquidity can be affected by market conditions.
Custodial risk:Bitcoin ETFs that hold actual Bitcoin are exposed to the risk of theft or hacking from their custodians.

Do spot Bitcoin ETFs have custodianship risk?

Yes, spot Bitcoin ETFs, which hold actual Bitcoin, carry custodianship risk. The underlying Bitcoin must be securely stored by a custodian. These risks include:
Hacking or theft:If the custodian's systems are compromised, Bitcoin could be lost.
Insurance:Some custodians offer insurance, but it may not cover all potential losses.
Reputation:Trusted custodians like Fidelity or Coinbase Custody help reduce risk, but newer custodians may carry more uncertainty.

Are Bitcoin ETFs a good investment?

Every investment comes with its own risks. However, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin are a highly volatile investment class. No investor should ever risk more than they can afford to lose.

What is the best Bitcoin ETF? How to choose Bitcoin ETFs?

We've included a list of spot Bitcoin and Bitcoin futures ETFs. Every investor is in a unique position with their own investment goals and needs. The best Bitcoin ETF for each investor can only be determined through research tailored to your specific needs and circumstances.
When choosing a Bitcoin ETF, investors should consider their personal financial goals, investment timeline, and risk tolerance.
In addition, the following factors are crucial when evaluating any Bitcoin ETF: assets under management, expense ratio, trading volume, and the fund's investment strategy.

How to invest in Bitcoin ETFs

As opposed to buying cryptocurrency outright, investing in a Bitcoin ETF is a relatively easy process:
The first step in purchasing a Bitcoin ETF is to open a brokerage account. There are many options for online brokers.
Once an investor has opened their account, they can purchase Bitcoin ETFs just as they would any other stock or ETF. In most cases, the investor simply searches for the ticker symbol in their brokerage interface, enters the number of shares they wish to purchase, and clicks "Buy".
ETFs charge an annual expense ratio, which is deducted from the investor's account.

What do Bitcoin ETF approvals mean for Bitcoin?

Bitcoin ETFs enhance Bitcoin's legitimacy and accessibility, potentially driving demand and price growth. However, the market will still be impacted by Bitcoin's volatility.
Increased legitimacy: Bitcoin ETFs establish Bitcoin as a mainstream asset, signaling recognition by regulators and traditional financial markets.
Easier access: ETFs allow traditional investors to gain exposure to Bitcoin without the need to buy or store it directly.
Higher demand and price potential: Institutional investors may boost demand for Bitcoin, potentially driving up its price as more funds buy Bitcoin through ETFs.
Market maturity: ETF approvals indicate that the Bitcoin market is maturing, attracting more institutional involvement and stability.
Regulatory oversight: Bitcoin ETFs are regulated, offering better protection and transparency compared to direct cryptocurrency trading.
Volatility and risk: While ETFs improve accessibility, they don't eliminate Bitcoin's price volatility or risks. However, institutional backing may help reduce extreme price swings over time.

How do Bitcoin ETF approvals affect other crypto investments?

The approval of Bitcoin ETFs has opened up the world of cryptocurrency investing to many investors who previously may not have had an appetite for it. For example, investing in a spot Bitcoin ETF, as opposed to owning cryptocurrency outright, may seem more secure or approachable to some investors.
As more money flows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, these funds have been able to purchase more Bitcoin, reducing its supply while increasing demand. This has led to a significant price increase in Bitcoin since the approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs.
As is often the case throughout cryptocurrency's short history, many other cryptocurrencies, often called altcoins due to their status as alternative coins to Bitcoin, have risen in value alongside Bitcoin's bull runs.
Additionally, following the SEC's approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs, applications for other spot crypto ETFs have been submitted to the SEC. The SEC is now considering approval for spot Ethereum ETFs, which would provide more investors with access to Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.
